FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center (GWV) has officially earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ Disease-Specific Care for Hip Fracture, Total Hip Replacement and Total Knee Replacement by demonstrating compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for health care quality and safety in disease-specific care.
GWV is one of two hospitals in Pennsylvania with Hip Fracture Certification, one of 20 with Hip Replacement Certification and one of 47 with Knee Replacement Certification.
“Achieving this certification demonstrates that we are dedicated to continuously providing safe, high-quality treatment and rehabilitation services to our hip fracture and total joint replacement patients,” said Michael Suk, M.D., J.D., M.P.H. chairman, department of orthopaedic surgery,Geisinger Health System. “Our participation in the certification process is not only an affirmation of the expert care available at GWV, but also helps us identify opportunities for future improvement.”
Certification requirements for these programs address three areas: compliance with consensus-based national standards; effective and consistent use of appropriate, evidence-based clinical practice guidelines; and collection and analysis of four performance measures specific to each program certification. As a certified organization, GWV has been awarded certification for a two-year period. Regular reviews will be carried out in order to maintain and renew certifications.
During the Joint Commission’s review, it analyzed the Geisinger Orthopaedic Institute’s commitment to honor Abigail Geisinger’s vow to “Make it the best.” During the review it was noted that Mrs. Geisinger’s words were honored repeatedly and that many orthopaedic practices were the best the surveyor had ever reviewed.
“With specialized programs such as our Geriatric Fracture Care Program, High-Risk Osteoporosis Clinic and Hip Preservation Clinic, each day we strive to provide our patients personalized, evidence-based care whether we are conducting an office consultation, surgical procedure or rehabilitation session,” said David Kolessar, M.D., orthopaedic surgeon, GWV. “Receiving this certification was undoubtedly a team effort that could never have been achieved without the tireless work of our nurses, physician assistants, athletic trainers and physicians, especially Drs. Anthony Balsamo and William Krywicki, whose work was instrumental in receiving this honor.”
