Hospital makes Becker’s 100 Great Hospitals, Great Neurosurgery and Spine Program lists

DANVILLE, Pa. – Geisinger Medical Center (GMC) was recently named to Becker’s Hospital Review’s 2013 lists of “100 Great Hospitals” and “100 Hospitals with Great Neurosurgery and Spine Programs.”

Becker’s 100 Great Hospitals are cited as innovators for medical treatments, research, technology and care delivery, and are home to medical breakthroughs, acting as anchors of health within their respective communities. Facilities making the list are subject to review by the Becker’s editorial team that includes a nomination process and research into various hospital ranking services.

According to Becker’s Hospital Review, the 545-bed GMC has become a pillar in American health care.

“We are extremely proud to be recognized as one of the nation’s top hospitals, especially when the honor comes from one of the health care industry’s most respected sources of business news,” said Tom Sokola (right), chief administrative officer for GMC. “Our inclusion is a reflection of our staff’s commitment to providing our patients the best care possible.”

The selection of Becker’s 100 Hospitals with Great Neurosurgery and Spine Programs was based on nominations, clinical accolades, quality care, spine and neurosurgical proficiencies, and recognition for excellence in the specialty by reputable healthcare rating resources.

Becker’s cites GMC for housing two of the three fellowship-trained neurosurgical oncologists in Pennsylvania and says its Brain & Spine Tumor Institute has made several advances in neuro-oncology.

“We believe we provide our patients optimum care from experienced specialists offering cutting-edge technologies that aid in their diagnosis and treatment,” said Steven Toms (left), M.D., FACS, MPH, director of neurosurgery, Geisinger Health System. “This honor serves as a highly-regarded third-party endorsement of our efforts and how residents of central Pennsylvania stand to benefit from advanced, innovative neurosurgical care close to home.”
