Release of book launched with ceremonial signing by author and Henry Hood, MD

Danville (PA) and Exeter (NH) — A ceremonial book signing was held on Monday, November 21, to mark the release of a new title, “Make it the Best—A History of Geisinger Health System 1912-2001,” by Donald D. Housley.

The event was held at Riverwoods Continuing Care Retirement Community in Exeter, New Hampshire, home of Geisinger Health System President and Chief Executive Officer Emeritus Henry Hood, MD, who served Geisinger and its patients from 1957 through 1992 as an accomplished neurosurgeon, Chief of Staff and President/CEO.

“Several years ago, Dr. Hood and I decided to move forward with a history of Geisinger centered largely on Henry’s recollections and records,” said Geisinger President and Chief Executive Officer Glenn Steele, Jr., MD. “We commissioned Donald Housley, Professor Emeritus of History at Susquehanna University, to work with Dr. Hood and write the text, and are pleased to see the tangible results of their collaboration.”

The book traces Geisinger’s history from its inception in 1912 until the arrival of Dr. Steele in 2001. The only previous published history of Geisinger, “The Story of the George F. Geisinger Memorial Hospital,” was written by Geisinger’s first President and CEO, Harold L. Foss and published in 1961.

“Henry Hood led Geisinger’s expansion from a tertiary medical center in Danville, Pennsylvania, to a regional health care system caring for patients throughout the central and northeast areas of the state,” said Dr. Steele. “His tenure as CEO was marked by tremendous vision, a commitment to medical education and research, and the expansion that set the table for Geisinger to continue its evolution well into the future.”

The ceremonial book signing was attended by several of Dr. Hood’s family members and Geisinger colleagues, directors and officers.

“I deeply appreciate the opportunity to meet and celebrate the publishing of this history,” said Dr. Hood. “Don Housley’s text is an essential record of the path Geisinger has woven through the evolution of health care in this country. I am thankful that I was able to serve as one of Geisinger’s leaders during this exciting time.”

Housley is also the author of “Susquehanna University, 1858-2000: A Goodly Heritage” and numerous articles dealing with regional and Lutheran history.
