AHA recognizes companies that serve as advocates for the health of their employees
DANVILLE, Pa. – Geisinger Health System recently earned the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Platinum Certification as a Fit-Friendly Worksite, which is granted to companies that aim to improve the health and wellness of employees.
“When we achieved Gold status last year, we set our sights on the Platinum designation for 2012. We are very excited to have earned such accolades by the AHA,” said Diane Harlow, manager, Employee Wellness, Geisinger Health System. “This national recognition calls attention to Geisinger and its efforts to promote the health of our employees.”
Companies earn Platinum-level recognition when they fulfill criteria in areas such as physical activity and culture, while demonstrating positive outcomes in the areas of behavior change, cost savings and return on investment. The certification is valid for one year.
“Geisinger has implemented many programs that have created a culture of wellness in the workplace,” said Harlow. “We are proud of our current accomplishments and intend to perpetually offer innovative programs to our employees.”
Geisinger employees have access to free pedometers, yoga sessions, and on-site recreation or fitness facilities. The Employee Wellness Department also recently kicked off its Couch to 5K! program - an exercise routine developed for employees that provides proper routine and support when training to run a 5K race. Maps of indoor and outdoor walking paths are also available for employees at all locations throughout the health system.
Geisinger’s Foodservices, Clinical Nutrition and Employee Wellness departments continue to work together to update/improve programs, services and offer employees healthy food choices. Lunch and Learn sessions are an example of educational programs available for employees. Employees are able to bring their lunch and learn a variety of information on different wellness topics. In addition, Foodservices’ Healthy Selections program offers patients, staff and visitors healthy eating choices along with different program options throughout the year.
Finally, Geisinger provides employees opportunities to participate in free wellness screenings for blood pressure, height and weight, and body fat/BMI, among others. Awareness campaigns are planned monthly, including women’s heart screenings and tobacco cessation programs. Employees can serve as Wellness Champions, with the commitment and desire to inspire co-workers about leading healthy lifestyles.
