Dr. Steele places eighth on national Modern Healthcare list

DANVILLE, Pa. – Glenn Steele Jr., M.D., Ph.D., president and chief executive officer, Geisinger Health System, has been named the nation’s eighth most influential physician executive and leader by Modern Healthcare. This year marks the fourth consecutive year Dr. Steele has appeared on the list.

Modern Healthcare, a weekly print magazine for health care executives, has been compiling its 50 Most Influential Physician Executives and Leaders list since 2005, basing its rankings on peer and expert nominations to deem which physician executives are the most influential in terms of demonstrating leadership and impact. The fee-free honor was a result of voting on a ballot of 100 nominees by Modern Healthcare readers and its editorial board. The top 50 from the voting process were included on the list.

“To be recognized by peers in the health care industry is a great source of pride for the entire staff at Geisinger that works each day to remain on the cutting edge of medicine in the clinical, research and business sectors of our industry,” said Dr. Steele. “With new genomic research initiatives, an innovative care delivery model in ProvenCare and the technology and skilled staff to deliver the highest level of care, it is our goal to maintain Geisinger’s prestigious place in the eyes of our health care colleagues.”

Dr. Steele’s position of eighth on the 2014 Most Influential Physician Executives and Leaders list is his highest ranking since his first appearance in 2011. Dr. Steele is joined in the top 10 by executives from CHE Trinity Health in Livonia, Mich., Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., Virginia Mason Health System in Seattle, the Food and Drug Administration, the American Medical Association, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the American Hospital Association and the Cleveland Clinic as well as Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber.

Dr. Steele is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, and since 2012, has served on the United States Congressional Budget Office’s panel of health advisers. He is also a member of the Roundtable on Value and Science-driven Healthcare, was recently appointed to the Committee on the Governance and Financing of Graduate Medical Education and previously served on the Committee on Reviewing Evidence to Identify Highly Effective Clinical Services (HECS).
