DANVILLE, Pa. – Geisinger Health System’s pediatric and congenital heart program has reported zero mortalities in association with approximately 60 procedures surgeons performed in 2012.

Among the surgeries, 13 percent were classified as having “high complexity” according to national standards of risk for congenital heart surgery. Such procedures have a 6 percent mortality rate according to 2012 Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) national data.

Thirty percent of the Geisinger surgeries were also classified as having “moderate complexity,” which also has a national mortality rate of 3 percent according to STS data.

“A highly specialized multidisciplinary team – including our expert pediatric cardiovascular surgeon (Anastasios Polimenakos, M.D., FACS, FACC, director, pediatric and congenital heart program) and pediatric cardiologists – care for newborns, infants, children and adults with a wide variety of congenital heart conditions,” said Robert Mangano, M.D., FACC, director, pediatric cardiology, Geisinger Health System. “Our team employs advanced best-practice cardiac care and the latest technology to produce these outstanding results.”

Geisinger Health System’s pediatric and congenital heart program comprises a comprehensive team of more than 20 fellowship-trained physicians who treat patients throughout northeastern and central Pennsylvania.
