DANVILLE, Pa. – Patients will now be able to schedule outpatient gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopies on select Saturdays on a monthly basis at Geisinger Woodbine Outpatient Clinic, 115 Woodbine Lane, Danville.

Outpatient gastrointestinal endoscopies – including colonoscopy and other upper GI procedures will now be offered on the second Saturday of each month beginning Oct. 15.

An endoscopy is an examination that is performed using a flexible fiberoptic tube with a tiny camera at the end. The camera is connected to a video screen that displays the images. The endoscope not only allows diagnosis of gastrointestinal (GI) disease, but treatment as well.

“Colonoscopies are one of the most common endoscopic procedures we perform,” said Michael Komar, M.D., director of the Department of Gastroenterology for Geisinger Health System. “It is the most reliable procedure available to screen for colorectal cancer, which when detected early, is one of the most treatable cancers.”

During a typical endoscopic procedure, air can become trapped in the colon, which can cause discomfort for patients. At Geisinger Woodbine Outpatient Clinic, physicians use carbon dioxide (CO2) during endoscopic procedures, rather than air. This decreases gas retention, lessening the amount of discomfort during and after the endoscopy, and reduces bloating during recovery.

“We are excited to have the opportunity to provide endoscopic procedures on an outpatient basis while offering more flexibility to patients with the convenience of Saturday appointments,” Dr Komar said.
