Jan. 9, 2013
DANVILLE, Pa. – Since merging with Geisinger Medical Center in January 2011, Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital (G-SACH) has experienced exponential growth in its joint replacement program and is now offering a bi-weekly total joint class for patients preparing for surgery. This new service will begin on Thursday, Jan. 24.
A representative from the orthopedic joint service will lead the educational process. Presentations will also be given by representatives from blood conservation, physical therapy, pharmacy and care management. Researchers from Function and Outcomes Research for Comparative Effectiveness in Total Joint Replacement (FORCE-TJR) – a national study funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality which Geisinger Health System participates in – will also address a class.
Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital has a joint floor exclusively dedicated to the care of joint replacement patients. There is also an in-house skilled nursing facility and an outpatient rehab facility on the G-SACH campus.
“We have the infrastructure in place at G-SACH to properly treat the growing number of joint replacement procedures,” said G. Dean Harter, M.D., orthopaedic surgeon, Geisinger Health System. “In addition the quality of the procedures, this new service (classes) offers additional support to patients both before and after joint replacement surgery.”
The classes are reserved for G-SACH patients preparing for joint replacement surgery. To schedule an appointment with a G-SACH orthopedic surgeon, call 1-800-275-6401. For additional information about the total joint class, please visit:
