FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DANVILLE, Pa. – Glenn Steele Jr., M.D., Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Geisinger Health System, has again been named to the United States Congressional Budget Office’s panel of health advisers. Dr. Steele, who has participated as an adviser since 2012, is one of 22 nationwide experts in the field of health care named to the panel that includes former Utah Governor Michael Leavitt, Massachusetts Institute of Technology economics professor Amy Finkelstein, Ph.D., and Harvard Medical School health care policy professor Michael Chernew, Ph.D., among others.
According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), its panel of health advisers “consists of widely recognized experts in health policy and the health care sector. Members have a variety of backgrounds, areas of expertise and experience. The panel hosts periodic meetings, during which the CBO benefits from the advisers’ understanding of cutting-edge research and the latest developments in health care delivery and financing.”
“The CBO’s panel of health advisers is an esteemed group of knowledgeable, innovative, experienced individuals within the health care field,” said Dr. Steele. “The group provides a superb environment for an exchange of ideas and strategies that can potentially change – for the better – the way American medical professionals deliver care.”
Since its founding in 1974, the CBO has produced independent analyses of budgetary and economic issues to support the Congressional budget process. The agency is strictly nonpartisan and conducts objective, impartial analysis, as part of dozens of reports and hundreds of cost estimates that its economists and policy analysts produce each year. All CBO employees are appointed solely on the basis of professional competence, without regard to political affiliation. The CBO does not make policy recommendations, and each report and cost estimate discloses the agency’s assumptions and methodologies.
In addition to the CBO Panel of Health Advisors, Dr. Steele is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, serves as a member of the Roundtable on Value and Science-driven Healthcare, was recently appointed to the Committee on the Governance and Financing of Graduate Medical Education, and previously served on the Committee on Reviewing Evidence to Identify Highly Effective Clinical Services (HECS). A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Steele is a member of the American Surgical Association, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and past president of the Society of Surgical Oncology.
