Local artist and cancer survivor’s work to be featured
DANVILLE, Pa. – On Thursday, Aug. 15, the House of Care at Geisinger Medical Center will host an artist reception from 7 to 9 p.m. to celebrate local artist and cancer survivor, Meaghan Troup. Several pieces of Troup’s will be displayed and available for purchase. The event is open to the public and refreshments will be served.
Troup, 28, a resident of Mifflinburg, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) when she was 13. An artist since she was a child, Troup’s work became deeper and more expressive during her treatment.
“It’s my hope that people who are viewing my artwork can remember there’s a lot of beauty in the world and there’s a lot to be joyful about,” said Troup. “I learned to focus on the positive and the good even though I was so ill. I want my artwork to be a source of peace and a reminder that all the negativity aside, the world can be a beautiful place if you let it be and if you choose to view it that way.”
The House of Care, located at Geisinger Medical Center, is a home away from home for adult cancer patients. Since opening in 1984, the House of Care provides low-cost, convenient and comfortable accommodations for adult patients undergoing treatment at Geisinger. The House of Care centers its focus on the therapeutic value of community and social interaction in order to support patients and their families undergoing difficult circumstances.
The House of Care at Geisinger purchased Troup’s piece entitled New Creation. Troup met with House of Care staff to discuss its collective vision for the piece, and said she was thinking about the people at the House of Care throughout the creative process. The flowering branches in New Creation, Troup said, “symbolize that no matter what battles or hardships we go through, we can be renewed. We can blossom and become stronger and better people through those situations. Whatever we’re facing isn’t the end of the story.”
