Distinction reflects the expertise of personnel and level of comprehensive care provided

DANVILLE, Pa. – Geisinger Medical Center (GMC) was recently designated as a Level 4 epilepsy center by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC).

The NAEC designation acknowledges GMC’s professional expertise and state-of-the-art facilities in providing the highest level of medical and surgical evaluation and treatment for complicated epilepsy cases. These cases include patients whose seizures have not been brought under control after three months of care by a family physician.

“This distinction recognizes GMC’s level of expertise among staff, and the thorough care we deliver to patients with complex epilepsy,” said Frank Gilliam, M.D., director of neurology, Geisinger Health System. “Our patients receive individualized treatment plans formulated by our team of medical and surgical professionals to achieve the best possible outcome for their health and well-being.”

GMC is one of six Level 4 epilepsy centers in Pennsylvania and one of 170 Level 3 or 4 centers nationwide. This distinction was granted to GMC for meeting NAEC criteria for providing intensive neurodiagnostic monitoring, medical, neuropsychological and psychosocial treatment for the most intricate epilepsy cases.

Intracranial evaluations provided by Level 4 centers also offer surgical treatment. This would include intracranial electrodes, which identify the epileptic cortex of the brain. Once pinpointed, resective epilepsy surgery is scheduled to remove the area of the brain responsible for causing seizures. Also considered during the evaluation process is a broad range of other complex surgical procedures for epilepsy, which Level 3 centers do not offer.
