FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DANVILLE, Pa. – Geisinger Medical Center (GMC) has received the 2012 Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals®: National Benchmarks Award. The New York-based firm recently released its annual study, identifying the 100 top U.S. hospitals based on overall organizational performance.
GMC was one of three Pennsylvania healthcare facilities to be named to this list in the Major Teaching Hospitals category. This announcement marks the eighth time GMC has been named to the Thomson “Top 100” list.
“Achieving high-quality patient outcomes while improving efficiency and ultimately lowering costs is something for which Geisinger has become nationally known,” said Ken Wood, D.O., chief medical officer, GMC. “Beyond accolades such as this, providing quality care is just the right thing to do for the people of this region.”
The Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals®: National Benchmarks study is based on the 100 Top Hospitals National Balanced Scorecard that evaluates performance in nine areas: mortality, medical complications, patient safety, average length of stay, expenses, profitability, cash-to-debt ratio, patient satisfaction, and adherence to clinical standards of care. The study has been conducted annually since 1993.
To complete the 100 Top Hospitals study, Thomson Reuters researchers evaluated 2,886 short-term, acute-care, non-federal hospitals. They utilized public information – Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website. Hospitals do not apply, and winners do not pay to market this honor.
If all hospitals performed at the same level as the 100 Top Hospitals award winners (based on an analysis of Medicare inpatients over one year):
“Recognition by Thomson Reuters confirms the success of Geisinger’s innovative model for healthcare delivery and the important role of our employees,” said Tom Sokola, chief administrative officer, GMC. “Absolutely none of this would be possible without what we refer to as ‘The Geisinger Family’ – our physicians, residents, fellows, nurses and support staff. We thank them for their unparalleled commitment to excellence and making such recognition possible.”
Geisinger continues to achieve national prominence for innovative programs and services. For example, Geisinger Health System was named to the country’s “100 Most Wired Hospitals and Health Systems” for the ninth time by Hospitals & Health Networks Magazine. GMC was named to the 2010 Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals®: National Benchmarks Award for overall organizational performance. The Richard and Marion Pearsall Heart Hospital at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center was named to a national Top 50 in Heart Surgery list. And Geisinger Health Plan was ranked the top private health plan in Pennsylvania and fifth in the nation according to the National Committee for Quality Assurance’s Health Insurance Plan Rankings 2010-2011.
