DANVILLE, Pa. — The Geisinger Medical Center (GMC) endoscopy department recently earned renewed recognition as a unit of quality through the Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program (EURP) of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE). GMC was initially recognized as a unit of quality in 2008.

Issuing certifications since 2008, the ASGE’s EURP ensures physicians, nurses and additional personnel are specially trained in endoscopy and dedicated to performing high-quality care. Earning the distinction of quality requires a department or office adhere to a set of guidelines that establishes quality assurance, infection control and overall superior patient care.

“Earning a seal of quality from the ASGE provides the department with recognition of our dedication to consistently delivering quality care and using technology to improve procedures,” said Amitpal Johal, M.D., director, endoscopy, GMC. “We will continue working under their set of standards that puts patient care, infection control and using innovative methods as our top priorities.”

The ASGE is recognized as the nation’s leader in setting standards for excellence in endoscopy procedures. In order to earn this recognition, a representative of the department must attend an educational course on improving quality and safety in addition to following their set of guidelines.

Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre was also recognized as a unit of quality this year.
